El Cabanyal, the fishermen’s quarter
Valencia guide · 4 min read
A walk through El Cabanyal, just behind the beach: tiled façades, the market, historic taverns and the Maritime Holy Week.
A village inside the city
El Cabanyal was once Poble Nou de la Mar, an independent fishing town until it joined Valencia at the end of the 19th century. Its long streets parallel to the sea keep the layout of the old fishermen’s huts, and the whole quarter is a protected heritage site.
Tiled façades
What makes it unique are its low houses with ceramic fronts: popular modernism with coloured tiles, wrought-iron balconies and wooden doors. It is the same love of tiles you will find in Perlamar’s kitchens and bathrooms.
Market and taverns
The Mercat del Cabanyal is the neighbourhood market, with fish from the auction and vegetables from the huerta. Around it are century-old taverns for a vermouth with pickles, anchovies or local mussels in season.
When to go
In the morning, for the market. In spring, for the Maritime Holy Week, with processions that reach the sea. From Passeig de Neptú 24 it is a few minutes on foot.
